Our journey in wine starts in France. The limestone slopes, gravel terraces, chalk plains, and sunburnt shorelines are a source of inspiration for winemakers worldwide. The concept of “terroir’, a magic word that cannot easily be translated into other languages. It refers to the soil, the climate, the terrain, the culture, the traditions. As the grape of white Burgundy, it produces a variety of flavors and styles according to where it’s grown and how it’s made. From minerally, unoaked Chablis to the grand and complex, nutty dry whites of Meursault, Chassagne and Puligny-Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune and the riper winesof Pouilly-Fuissé further south. Along with Pinot noir, it is alsothe major grape variety in Champagne. Particular and unique in Jura, because of its versatility it’s spread like a bush firethroughout Europe and the New World, with brilliant, opulentlyand exotically flavored whites in California or refreshingly high-acid expressions in Australia.

LOIRE- CHENIN BLANC

Surrounding the 625-mile-long Loire River, the Loire Valley is so vast and diverse that it is really more a collection of wine regions than a single one, and this is especially true when it comes to the cultivation of its most beloved white grapes. If the western Loire is home to Melon de Bourgogne and the eastern Loire is the realm of Sauvignon Blanc, between these two lies the land of Chenin Blanc, arguably the region’s noblest grape.

RIESLING:

Wine made from Riesling is quite unlike any other. It is generally light in alcohol, refreshingly high in fruity natural acidity and has the ability to transmit the character of a place, the “terroir”. It is capable of ageing for decades in bottle. Riesling is a star and, as you may discern, one of my great wine heroes!

RHÔNE - CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE:

The southern Rhône valley is Grenache country. It’s also known for its stones. With a viticulture history dating back well before the Popes arrived in the 12th century and one of France’s oldest appellations d’origine contrôlée, Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe, the southern Rhône is unquestionably one of France’s best known and premier winegrowing regions.

BEAUJOLAIS

Beaujolais is the kingdom of an underrated, delicious grape: Gamay! Much like the easy-going and friendly nature of many Beaujolais vignerons, the wines too have a lively and easy-drinking spirit. They are versatile at table but make particularly good matches with pork sausages and charcuterie.

PIEMONTE

Situated in a maze of hills as steep as pyramids, Piedmont produces its finest wines with a grape even more challenging than Pinot Noir to grow, the late ripening Nebbiolo. Famed for the haunting perfume of aged bottles of Barolo and Barbaresco, even in youth it gives a translucent charm underpinned with strict tannins, making it more austere and also more imposing than its Burgundian cousin on the other side of the Alps. Barbera is the country cousins whose company is easy to enjoy.

Mount Etna is the highest Mediterranean island mountain and the tallest peak in Italy south of the Alps with a current height (September 2024) of 3,403 m (11,165 ft), though this varies with summit eruptions. Etna is the most active stratovolcano in the world. The eruptive history of the volcano can be traced back 500,000 years and at least 2,700 years of this activity has been documented

Sierra de Gredos is located some 80 km west of Madrid, The climate here is continental, with very cold winters and scorching summers, and plantings are between 600-1,200m elevation. The wines from Sierra de Gredos are light, ethereal, pure and at the same time powerful and intense, with beautiful red-fruit aromatics and an unusual wet stone, grainy minerality. Sierra de Gredos is the “base” of Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia, friends since college. Drawn to the mountains by rumors of small, nearly inaccessible, old vineyard plots located high in the Sierra de Gredos, over time, they began purchasing and leasing the best sites they could find, creating their own project, COMANDO G, in 2008. Dani and Fernando are redefining what was previously viewed as a workhorse variety, Garnacha, into something that can rival the elegance and finesse of Pinot in Burgundy or Syrah in the Northern Rhône, producing some of the finest wines made anywhere in the world. We are proud to have them at Sospiro!

CASTILLA Y LEON - BIERZO

Raúl Pérez Pereira is universally considered to be one of the world’s most visionary winemakers. Since he produced his first vintage for his family’s winery in 1994 at the age 22, he has been in the forefront of the conversation about what has been called “The New Spain” He runs assorted projects throughout Northwest Spain (and beyond), but his home base is Bierzo, which is situated right where the Galicia region gives way to Castilla y Léon. Raúl Pérez’s Mencía-based reds have been slam dunks with Northern Rhône Syrah and Cru Beaujolais drinkers. They are unadulterated expressions of the villages and vineyards from which they hail. In my opinion they go even further, setting a new benchmark for world-class wine lovers.
